'Groupon' Advertising

Flyers and Coupons have now entered the Social-Media Age.

Chicago based business ‘Groupon’ launched their “Deal of the Day’ website in November 2008. The concept was an instant hit with the public and not only have Groupon grown exponentially since then but we have seen a flood of simular website launched providing the same service.

The concept is a simple one. A business can post a special offer on the ‘Groupon’ website that is only available to purchase for 24 hours. In order for the deal to become "active" a certain number of users must join and pledge to buy the special offered on the website. Once the deal reaches the tipping point, the deal is done and each consumer gets the special. The business that posts the offer does not pay an advertising fee to be involved, but instead pays a percentage of the sale price (typically 30%) to the ‘Groupon’ site. In addition to access to very special deals the public using the site are incentivised to invite their friends and family to join the website and receive $5 to $10 for everyone who joins and purchases one of the daily deals. This builds the subscriber base and means that these sites become more and more successful.
